SEPTEMBER REVIEW
The House Of My Mother by Shari Franke
Genre: Memoir
Estimated Reading Time: 3 Hours 15 Minutes
Jaw dropped. I finished this book in just over three hours, I could not put it down. There was so much that happened. So much that I remember watching. It was mind blowing reading from her direct perspective. I truly thought her mum became the way she did because of greed and social media. While that definitely played a big part, her mum has always been… something.
The LDS church used to be incredibly different from the way it is now, and Ruby lived by the rules/expectations religiously. Literally. She was made up of extreme levels of perfectionism and manipulation.
Shari shared, in depth, the lengths her mother went to as she and her siblings grew up. She gave deeply personal insight on the ‘influencer’ life and being ‘family vloggers’. It’s emotional. It makes you sympathize, feel disturbed, angry, yet also inspired by Shari’s strength and willpower as she protected her siblings. She truly wrote about everything. The point of where it all began, to her recovery and search for freedom. This memoir is powerful and brings awareness to life behind the camera. Shari is courageous and resilient. Her and her family have gone through so much yet she is always seeking understanding. It can be a difficult read, but it’s an important one.
I try to keep my reviews short, but I truly mean it when I say I could write endlessly about this book. It is a MUST read even if you aren’t typically into memoirs.
